Heating/Cooling Fresh Air Using Hot/Cold Exhaust Air of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Systems

This paper suggests a heat recovery concept that is based on preheating/precooling the cold/hot fresh outside air by means of relatively hot/cold exhaust in winter/summer weather conditions. To investigate feasibility such concept, an experimental setup established to simulate conditions similar All-Air HVAC system. The prototype consists 6.7-m3 air-conditioned chamber split unit 5.3-kW capacity. module duct system used reroute from conditioned flow through fin side fin-and-tube exchanger crossflow type. At same time, outside, flowing tube exchanger. A parametric study performed assess amount can be recovered varying mass rates both and sides. results show up 200 W power saved for rate 0.1 kg/s fresh, outdoor 0.05 kg/s. Environmentally speaking, this leads reduction production about 1 tons CO2 per year when operates 24 h/day. From economic point view, able return its price after 1.5 years it h day during hot days at 196-W thermal recovery, whereas requires least 6.3 cold 60-W rate, which, cases, represents duration less than lifespan conditioner.
